Overview:

Students in engineering colleges do not normally get an opportunity to attend a curriculum focused to industry needs. They are also often found lacking in theoretical orientation and practical experience in specific fields like Electrical Equipment Instrumentation, automation and Total Quality Management etc, which are important for all industries.

BASIC DIFFERENCES AT A GLANCE TRADITIONAL VS IIM COURSE
Sl SALIENT POINTS OTHERS IIM
1. Course Design Conventional In collaboration with Industry professionals
2. Faculty Generally from Teaching Profession Generally from Industrial / Engineering profession
3. Teaching Methodology Traditional
More stress on practical and experiments, which are oriented towards industrial applications. Theory classes supported by Audio – Visual multimedia demonstration.
4. Course Content (Theoretical) Traditional Fully Industry Oriented Topics covered. Extensive stress on application engineering relevant to industry.
5. Course Content (Practical) Conventional Specific to relevant industrial applications
6. Equipment Generally equipment procured from suppliers which allow user / operator level interaction with equipment for performing experiments. Not much access to internal subassemblies of equipment or in-house maintenance of equipment. Mostly with open frame layout (as compared to fully boxed-up supplies from vendors) for superior understanding.
7. Equipment maintenance Generally maintained by suppliers leading to long down time in case of defects. By qualified, in-house, industry trained staff.
8. Laboratories Traditional laboratories of educational institutions. Fully operational to provide industry standard facilities and majority laboratories are NABL accredited.
9. Demonstrators & Technicians Personnel associated with teaching profession All professionals who are associated with industry
10. Extent of  Equipment usage by students during practical Limited to operator level usage for performance of experiments In addition to performing of experiments using the equipment, complete access to internal sub-assemblies / parts for clear understanding of equipment from maintenance point of view.
11. Technical Reference Documents Conventional - Technical Text & Reference Books In addition to Technical Text & Reference Books, manufacturers’ Data Sheet, Manuals & Design Hand Books, Engineering (EPC) Consultants documentations will be extensively used.
12. Orientation Training Generally not a part of conventional courses. Ex-tempore speech, Seminars, Group Discussion shall be integral part of course to inculcate leadership qualities and to make students face the challenges of interview boards.
13. Industry Exposures Generally not a part of conventional courses. Extensive visits to Core Sector & Continuous process industries (under guidance of faculty members) to give real life exposure to what is taught in classroom.
